The Keansburg Fishing Pier stretches nearly 2,400 feet into Raritan Bay, giving anglers on foot a reach into water they could otherwise only fish by boat. It's a managed pier with a bait and tackle shop at the entrance, and its length leaves plenty of room for everyone from first-timers to regulars.
When to fish
- Spring and fall: striped bass, with the pier sometimes open all night during peak striper season.
- Summer: fluke, weakfish, bluefish, kingfish, spot and croaker, with the occasional cobia. Expect dogfish, skates, rays and sea robins too.
Where to fish
With nearly half a mile of pier there's room to spread out; ask at the shop at the entrance where fish are being caught.
How to fish it
The shop at the entrance sells bait (squid, bunker and worms) and rents tackle, and the staff will tell you what's biting and where on the pier to set up. Circle hooks are required.
Getting there
Admission is by paid wristband, bought at the shop at the entrance. The pier usually opens around 7 a.m. and closes around 10 p.m., with hours that shift by season and weather. There's a fillet station and restrooms along the way, but little shade, so bring sun protection. Alcohol, cast nets and bait traps aren't allowed. Anglers 16 and older must register with New Jersey's free Saltwater Recreational Registry.
