Lake Cochituate, three connected basins in Cochituate State Park where Framingham, Natick and Wayland meet, is a Boston-area lake with a bit of everything. MassWildlife says few lakes in the state offer such variety: an excellent largemouth fishery in all three basins, abundant panfish with big bluegill and yellow perch, trout stocked every spring and fall, and pike or tiger muskies stocked now and then (pike most recently in 2024).
When to fish
- Spring and fall: trout stockings, though MassWildlife says stocked trout give good action all year.
- Summer: largemouth bass and panfish; the lake is busy with boaters, and waterskiing is allowed on the south basin.
Where to fish
- All three basins: MassWildlife finds largemouth and panfish throughout. The north basin is the deepest on average; the south basin is the largest and has the deepest hole, at 69 feet.
- The shoreline: much of it is state park, and weeds are common along the shore. MassWildlife's advice for shore anglers is to park at a launch and explore on foot.
Getting there
DCR's main ramp, with parking for about 50 trailers, is in Cochituate State Park off Route 30 in Wayland on the middle basin. A cartop launch with shore fishing on the north basin is a quarter-mile walk from the park headquarters lot across Route 30, and the Wayland town beach off Pemberton Road has a cartop launch (no motors). Parking fees may apply, and the park posts daily hours with an earlier boats-off-the-water time. The basins are connected by culverts you can boat through, and speed limits and no-wake zones apply near the ramp and channels. There's a PCB and PFAS consumption advisory for fish from all basins. You need a Massachusetts freshwater fishing license, and small lead sinkers and lead jigs are banned in fresh water.
