Hull Gut is the narrow, deep channel at the tip of Hull that tankers use on their way into Quincy's Fore River. The Fisherman's writer, a charter captain, says it fishes like the Cape Cod Canal: deep, fast water with big striped bass holding near the bottom, some over 30 pounds, within casting range of shore.
Where to fish
- The Gut itself: the channel is at least 35 feet deep starting about 50 feet from shore, so shore anglers can reach deep water with a jig.
- The bar to the north: just outside the Gut, a spot for casting swimming plugs.
How to fish it
From shore, fish it like the Canal: heavy jig heads (two to six ounces) with long soft plastics, cast well up-current and given time to sink to the bottom. The bottom is rough, so expect to lose jigs. By boat, start your drift well up-tide of where the channel narrows: live eels at night, live or dead menhaden in daytime, or metal jigs heavy enough to stay under the boat. Keep repeating the drift wherever you mark fish.
Getting there
Follow the signs to Nantasket Beach, take Nantasket Avenue to its end and turn left; the writer's landmark is the big wind turbine. The Gut is a shipping channel: daytime boat traffic can make it dangerous, and give the channel buoys a wide berth. You need a Massachusetts saltwater fishing permit. Striped bass have a slot limit, you must use inline circle hooks when fishing bait for them, and gaffing them is illegal.
