Craven's Landing (Scorton Creek)

Cape Cod and the Islands Massachusetts

Position

41°44.9′N 70°25.7′W

Craven's Landing is a small Marine Fisheries property on Scorton Creek in East Sandwich, a tidal creek running into Cape Cod Bay. It has a launch for small boats and shore fishing that DMF calls great in summer, and DMF says anglers who brave the colder months can catch holdover striped bass here. Shad and winter flounder turn up too, and DMF passes along rumors of sea-run brown trout in the creek.

When to fish

  • Summer: DMF's pick for the best fishing, though piping plover nesting can close some or all of the site between June and August.
  • Winter: holdover striped bass for anglers who brave the cold.

Where to fish

  • The creek from the landing: fish from the property's shore or launch a small boat. The land north of the creek and the fence is private; only anglers actively fishing may walk the intertidal zone there.

Getting there

From Route 6A in East Sandwich, take Ploughed Neck Road to its end, turn right on North Shore Boulevard, go 0.4 mile and turn right on Holway Road; the landing is at the end. Park only in the signed spots, first come, first served. Much of the site floods at high tide (Cape Cod Bay's tides can top 11 feet), so watch where the wet sand shows the last high tide, and the soft sand on the creek side needs four-wheel drive. You need a Massachusetts saltwater fishing permit. Shad are catch and release only here, and striped bass have a slot limit and a circle hook rule for bait.
