Mashapaug Lake is a 287-acre lake in Union, right below the Massachusetts line, with its state launch inside Bigelow Hollow State Park. It's one of DEEP's walleye lakes, DEEP stocks it with trout, and it's managed for bass, with both largemouth and smallmouth plus chain pickerel and yellow perch.
When to fish
- Fall: DEEP stocks trout (the lake is on the fall 2026 list). Trout fishing is catch and release from March 1 until opening day in April.
- Year-round: walleye, stocked each fall as fingerlings since 2001. DEEP has given trophy walleye awards for fish from every lake in the program.
- Occasionally: On The Water (2014) reported that DEEP sometimes stocks large broodstock Atlantic salmon here.
Getting there
The state launch is in Bigelow Hollow State Park off Route 171, about 1.3 miles east of Route 190 in Union, with a concrete dock and about 10 parking spaces. There's a speed limit and no water-skiing. Mashapaug is a Bass Management Lake (with a protected slot for bass) and a Walleye Lake; check the Connecticut Freshwater Fishing Guide for current limits.
