Allamuchy Pond is a 50-acre pond in Allamuchy Mountain State Park, just off Interstate 80 at exit 19. It's entirely public water, overlooked by the Rutherford Hall manor house, and it's a largemouth and crappie pond: 3-pound bass are common and crappie are abundant, with pickerel and yellow perch mixed in. There's no ramp, which keeps the pressure light.
When to fish
- Spring: crappie move into the shallows to spawn as the water warms.
- Early summer mornings: topwater bass fishing on the flats.
Where to fish
- Deadfalls along the steep shorelines and the flats at both ends of the pond: spring crappie.
- The flats at the top and bottom and the gently sloping eastern shore: early-summer topwater.
- The breakline where 4- to 5-foot weedy shallows drop into deeper water: the best place for bigger bass. Broad weedy flats without a drop tend to produce smaller fish.
- The rocky western shoreline: drops off quickly to 17 feet or more.
How to fish it
Work topwater plugs across the flats early in the morning, and drag weedless frogs over thick weeds and wood. For crappie, fish the deadfalls in spring.
Getting there
From I-80 exit 19, take County Road 517 south; the pond is almost immediately on the left. There's no boat ramp; kayaks and canoes can be lowered down the embankment between the boulders.
